by Derek ToneyMount Carmel High senior pitcher Stephon Dingle has decided to attend St. Mary's College. Dingle said he selected St. Mary's over Norfolk State and Prairie View A&M.
"I wanted to get a good education at this great public honors college in St. Mary's, and also felt the relationship I had with coach Lew Jenkins and pitching coach Liam Bowen was far better than that of the other schools," said Dingle, a righthander.
Dingle will be part of an incoming freshman class that will include MIAA performers John Stewart from St. Mary's and Boys' Latin Devon Jerrard. Bobby Corton (Calvert Hall College), Jon Gill (Park School), Lance Hyle (Archbishop Curley) are currently on the Seahawks' roster. St. Mary's is 16-19-1 this season, and was eliminated from the Capital Athletic Conference tournament last week in Delaware.
A two-time MIAA B all-star selection, Dingle is 5-2 with 61 strikeouts and a 1.39 earned run average this spring for the Cougars (8-7 overall, 3-3 in MIAA B Black division). He's batting .469 with 25 RBI. Dingle was a two-time MIAA B all-star pick for volleyball.
