So often, the bigger, stronger football players are left out of offseason competition.

Not this past week.

Lee-Davis, Douglas Freeman, Thomas Dale and Dinwiddie's strongest players participated in two lifting competitions.

The Confederates hosted their first annual Push-Pull Competition, equipped and officiated by AAU and the Virginia Powerlifting Association.

Douglas Freeman came out on top in team competition. The overall individual winner was Vaughn Robinson of Thomas Dale.

Three L-D players set AAU world records in Kenny Jones (16-17 year-olds and 220 pounds, 518-pound dead lift), Matt Doty (14-15 year-olds and 242 pounds, 474-pound dead lift) and Matt Marlowe (17-18 & 198 pounds, 508-pound dead lift).

"We want to thank all of the support staff from AAU and the Virginia Powerlifting Association," Lee-Davis coach Jason Meade said. "We will have another competition around the same time and hope to have a larger turnout."

Dinwiddie won the Steel Factory Invitational Powerlifting Meet this past Saturday.

Individually, Jason Ampy took three first-place spots, followed by Bradley Johnson, who had two firsts and a third.

Speaking of Johnson, the 6-2, 200-pound linebacker with 4.5 speed in the 40-yard dash, is racking up scholarship offers from some of the top schools in the nation.

Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Maryland, Duke, South Carolina, Richmond and East Carolina have all offered the all-region tackler.

Generals wide receiver Sam Haskins (6-5, 210 pounds) has garnered offers, too, with Delaware and Minnesota wanting his services.

In more Generals football news, Steffon Luccess and Andrew Wagy will both play for Ferrum. Luccess was second-team all-district at defensive line and Wagy is an all-district talent at linebacker.

Another linebacker, Jimmie Simmons (honorable mention all-region and metro) is going to Bridgewater.
