Bladensburg, MD – Elizabeth Seton High School (ESHS) announces the signing of two student athletes to women’s collegiate track teams. On Feb. 9, 2009
Dionna Hayes ‘09 signed a letter of intent to join the Division I program at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. A four year member of Seton’s varsity track team, Hayes states of her accomplishment, “Thank God for a great experience throughout the years of my track career.”
Hayes, who runs the 55m, 60m, 100m and 200m relays, was the 2008 Washington Catholic League Female Most Valuable Player for Track. Hayes who was also recruited by schools in both the Big East and the Big Ten says, “I feel Virginia Commonwealth University offers the best of both worlds – a great medical program not too far from home but just far enough away, and a great track program.”
Coach J. Riley of VCU says of Hayes’ commitment to join VCU, “We are excited to have Dionna as a part of the VCU Women’s Track and Field family. I expect Dionna to give us the foundation we need to compete for CAA championships in the next four years. She is the first student athlete to sign as I take over the reigns as head coach and now the foundation is set. We love her energy and enthusiasm.”
Also signing a letter of intent is
Jameice DeCoster ’09. DeCoster, who signed her letter of intent on Feb. 4, will join the women’s track & field team at the University of Wisconsin, a Division I program in the Big Ten Conference in Madison, Wisconsin. DeCoster, who has been a member of the varsity track team at Seton for two years, runs the 100m, 200m and 400m events. DeCoster says of the hard work it took her to become a Wisconsin Badger, “Sometimes we overlook the blessings in life because we are oftentimes overwhelmed with the bad that’s going on. We simply do not take the time to count our blessings because if we did, we would realize that our good days do outweigh our bad ones.”
Mark Guthrie, head coach of the Wisconsin program, is extremely excited about DeCoster’s commitment: “The University of Wisconsin is pleased to have an athlete of Jameice DeCoster’s ability and personal integrity as a new member of our program. Her athletic talents will anchor our sprint group. Her personality and leadership skills will be a valuable asset as our program continues to move forward. Her range as one of the nation’s top sprinters is unique and is an asset that we are extremely excited to have as part of our team. Once we met Jameice and her family on campus, we knew immediately this was an athlete and family that we wanted as a member of the Wisconsin Track & Field family.”
