Richmond (Mar. 10, 2009) - The Loudoun County High School girls basketball team continued its run through the AA Division 4 VHSL state tournament field lwith the ease of facing an overmatched summer league schedule, posting a second consecutive blowout, this time crushing Charlottesville, 77-45, Tuesday to advance to the state finals Saturday.
The Raiders (25-4) will face the winner of Wednesday's Turner Ashby-Hidden Valley contest at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Siegel Center at VCU. While the Raiders lost to TA to start the season, this is a different LC team as the Raiders are rolling, having out-scored opponents 167-96 in two state tournament games, including a 95-36 first half advantage in those two wins.
On Tuesday, LC controlled the opening tip and never looked back ... honest! Kendra Holmes tapped the ball to Alissa Kaina and she drove in for a layin. For the record, the Black Knights led at 3-2 and then the Raiders scored 19 of the next 21 points to lead at the end of the first quarter, 21-5.
It was too much senior Kerry Sarver running the fast break. It was too much Holmes inside, playing about much, much taller than she looks. It was too much Brittany Batts left wide open in 3-point land where she shoots like a modern day Annie Oakley. And it was too much Alissa Kain who plays with enough intensity this postseason that she should have some eye black on under her piercing stare.
And if that wasn't enough it was too much of anybody else that Raider coach Kevin Reed threw on the court as the young Raiders are playing with complete poise in the postseason.
The stifling Raider defense forced 29 turnovers with Batts scoring 23 and Kain adding 19. Holmes had a double-double with 10 rebounds and 10 points. Sarver just missed a double-double with eight points and nine assists.
The Black Knights seemed deflated and the game got out of hand in the second quarter as LC stetched its lead to 28 points. Everything was going LC's way and the second half lacked drama as it was apparent that the Raiders would be moving on.
The Raiders shot 42.3 percent from the field including 6 of 17 from 3-point range.
Sarver has a chance for a unique double-double of her own as she captured a AA state title at the Siegel Center in the fall with the Raider volleyball team and now she can capture a state title in basketball. No Loudoun team has ever won a state title in basketball and now there are two chances on Saturday as Freedom and Loudoun County compete in the D3 and D4 finals.
