The Marshall Statesmen defeated the visiting Langley Saxons tonight 1-0 in the first round Liberty District matchup. It was a classic pitcher's duel. Junior Shannon Engle pitched a great game for the Saxons giving up just one run, and junior Christine Grilliot was nearly perfect, pitching a no-hitter and allowing only 3 base runnesr all evening on 2 walks and an error and had the games only RBI. Marshall's defense came to play and was sharp behind Grilliot.
The game remained knotted at 0 until the bottom of the fourth when Statesmen catcher, junior Michelle Tilson hit a triple to left field and Grilliot singled to center to plate the only run they would need. The win earns the Statesmen a place in the semi finals Saturday against number 1 seed McLean and a spot in the Northern Regional Tournament.
