Fourth-ranked Lawrence North saved its best for last, defending its own state title in the 4x800 meter relay at the 36th Annual IHSAA Girls Track & Field State Finals to catapult the Wildcats to their first-ever state championship June 6 at Indiana University in Bloomington.
Lawrence North hopped on the back of its star, senior Stacia Weatherford, in totaling 51 points to fend off three-time defending state champ third-ranked Warren Central by six points for the crown. Weatherford accumulated 18 points on her own by defending her title in the 300 hurdles (:43.55) and finishing a heartbreaking second in the 100 hurdles (:14.49, just one-hundredth of a second behind Hamilton Southeastern senior Portia Bailey).
Weatherford then joined with sophomore Antonia Franklin, sophomore Ashley Spencer, and junior Ahlivia Spencer in the final event of the evening as LN defended its state championship in the 4x400 relay with victory in 3:51.39.
Unranked Park Tudor, behind the standout performances of the Farley girls, placed a surprising third with 39 points, while top-ranked North Central (Indianapolis) (33) finished fourth and second-ranked Carmel tied No. 12 Hamilton Southeastern for fifth at 30.
Senior Hannah Farley lost out on a chance to win four straight 400-meter state titles by finishing second to Warren Central sophomore Logan Hayes (:54.53), but the meet's Mental Attitude Award winner persevered in taking third in both the 100 and the 200. All sophomore Abby Farley did individually was post a going-away 2:12.42 in winning the 800.
The Farleys also combined to make up half of Park Tudor’s third-place 3:54.39 in the 4x400 relay.
One state record was set on the evening, that coming in the pole vault as Pendleton Heights junior Ellie McCardwell cleared 13-06.25. That was just enough to break the old mark of 13-06.
