Second-year Lee-Davis coach Jason Meade has all of the skill positions he could ever want.

Now he just needs to find the right combination of offensive and defensive linemen.

“Who are going to be the five [offensive linemen] and four [defensive
linemen] that are going to fill in?” Meade said. “We have to get that
answered.”

It’s early, so the Confederates have plenty of time to find the right combination to provide adequate trench play.

He has a few players that aren’t question marks in DL Calvin Davis and OL/DL Matt Doty.

“We’re looking pretty good. Stout and big,” Doty said. “We’re going to be quicker than last year.”

The aforementioned skilled positions have quickness, speed, hands, power and some other adjectives that don’t pop to mind.

Leading the way is RB Tucker Walton, who had a standout 2008 year and comes back bigger, stronger and faster.

His receivers that will help keep defenses honest are Brandon Angus and Will Connerley, to name a very few.

Two QBs are battling for the starting spot, senior Phillip Gardner and junior William Coalson. If the season began today, Coalson would be the man.

“I think we did too much rotating last year,” Meade said of Gardner and the graduated Will Burton sharing time in the pistol formation. “We need to decide on a guy and ride with him.”

The Confederates platooned last year, but will get their best athletes on the field at all times this year.

So Angus and Connerley will go both ways, anchoring the defensive backfield. Brandon Robinson leads the linebacking core and will also be a lineman.

L-D went 4-6 last season and were in a bunch of games no one thought it
would be in. They want to take the next step in the tough Capital
District this season.

“I think with our off-season conditioning and our work ethic right
now,” Walton said, “I think we are going to be able to compete with the
high-level ones.”
