Maybe
they couldn't go to Disneyworld, but Calvert Hall's performance at the
Doc Jones Invitational in Annapolis can hardly be described as Mickey Mouse.
The
Cardinals thundered across the Annapolis High School course for wins in
the D, C, B1 and A1 divisions, including a perfect score of 15 in the
Varsity D race. Their narrowest margin of victory in the four races was
35 points, while their largest was 60. And if they weren't a boys-only
school, well".
Calvert Hall was a bit of a late entry into Doc
Jones only due to a change in plans. Coach Randy Fowler had originally
scheduled the team to run in the Disney Classic in Orlando, but when
informed by the school administration that the team would not be
allowed to miss school time for the long trip south, he instead set his
sights on Annapolis.
"I was looking forward to taking my boys
down to Orlando and showing them off to some of my old coaches," said
Fowler, a Florida native. "But when we couldn't go, we came here
instead and I think we made a pretty good statement."
Calvert
Hall didn't make just one statement; rather they made an entire litany
of them. How well did they dominate? Let us count the ways.
- In the Varsity D race, Calvert Hall claimed the top eight spots for a
perfect score of 15 and 55 points better than second-place Leonardtown
(70).
- The Cardinals took four of the top five spots in Varsity C, finishing 60 points ahead of second-place Mt. Hebron.
- Calvert Hall placed six runners in the B1 race for a 27-62 win over Walter Johnson.
- Despite a meet-best 16:31.1 finish by Atholton's Graham Bazell in the
A1 race, the Cardinals placed all five runners in the top 15 to
outdistance Walter Johnson, 43-89. Senior Anthony Rowe paced the
Cardinals with a third-place time of 17:03.1, just .5 seconds behind
Walter Johnson's Chris Moen. The other top Calvert Hall finishers
included juniors Chris Swisko (5th, 17:09.9) and Trent Seawell 8th,
17:36.5), Logan Pasqual (12th, 17:49.5) and John Fitzgerald (15th,
17:56.7).
