Alec Baum
(Centennial) threw a shut-out, and Kodi Beckwith (Towson Catholic)
blasted a two run homer, as the Maryland Orioles beat the Putty Hill
Panthers 5-0 in a 16 and under Baltimore Metro game at the 6th St.
Field in Brooklyn, on Thursday night.
The Panthers got a well-pitched
game from Wick Eisenberg, who had a great spring on the mound for
Friends School, as Eisenberg and Baum hooked up in a great pitchers
duel through four innings. Neither team scored until the fifth, when
O's second baseman Kenny Gosnel (Mount St. Joseph) hit a two-run single
and Beckwith whacked his two run homer to give Baum a four run cushion.
The O's added one more in the sixth, and it was Gosnel driving in
another run with a two-out single, plating shortstop Mike Schmidt
(North County) who was 2-for-3 and scored two runs. Left-fielder Chris
Peltz (Cardinal Gibbons), who has had a stellar year on the mound, had two hits and scored once for the O's.
Schmidt singled to lead off both the fifth and the sixth innings to ignite the Oriole scoring. He was also brilliant defensively,
triggering double-plays in the first and second innings to get Baum out
of trouble.
Baum was aided by three double plays on the night.
Oriole catcher Russ
Patti was strong behind the plate, nailing a Panther runner trying to
steal in the sixth, and executing a sharp double-play in the third to end a
Panther threat..
Baum helped his own cause In the seventh when, with runners on first and second and nobody out, he wheeled and picked off Nck Karsos (Towson High), who led off the Putty
Hill seventh with a single. The deceptive move by Baum took the
starch out of the Panthers, who looked like they might pull off a last inning rally.
Max Cooke (Gilman) had two hits for the Panthers,
including a doube to start the game. After Jerry Joiner got an infield single with one out in the first, Putty Hill had a golden opportunity to break out on top, but clean-up hitter Joe Boling (Archbishop Curley) hit one to
Gosnell, who speared the liner and flipped to first to double-up Joiner
and end the threat.
Catcher Devin Hill (St. Frances) had two hits for the Panthers.
