MCDONOGH ON THE DEFENSIVE AS TOP SEED IN B-CONFERENCE FIELD HOCKEY PLAYOFFS

John Carroll, Mount de Sales and Friends round out top four seeds

They say that "defense wins championships." If that's the case, then top-seed McDonogh would be on the fast-track to the IAAM B-Conference field hockey title this year.

The Eagles earned the top seed after going 12-1-1 on the season, good for sole possession of first place. McDonogh's defense allowed just six goals, the lowest in the league, and never allowed more than one goal in any contest.

John Carroll (10-3-1) grabbed the #2 seed. The Patriots led the league until hitting a tough stretch late in the season that saw them lose three in a row, two of those in-league, and lose the battle for first-place.

Mount de Sales (9-3-2) and Friends (5-7-2) round out the top four seeds.

Glenelg Country, defending champ Maryvale Prep, Seton Keough and Park will all try to play the role of spoiler, looking for an upset win in the tourney.

Here is a quick look at the "B" field hockey quarter-final match-ups for Tuesday, October 30.

#8 Park (2-10-2) @ #1 McDonogh (12-1-1)
The host Eagles posted two of their league-leading eight shutouts over Park, 4-0 and 4-0. Coach Halyna Fried is counting on her defense to continue its excellent play.

#5 Glenelg Country (4-8-1) @ #4 Friends (5-7-2)
The 4-5 match-up should be a close battle. The Quakers won both in-season meetings by the same 1-0 score.

#7 Seton Keough (2-9-1) @ #2 John Carroll (10-3-1)
An interesting match-up here, as the Patriots won easily, 5-0, in their first match, but the Gators bounced back with a 1-0 win, handing JC its first league loss.

#6 Maryvale Prep (4-8-1) @ #3 Mount de Sales (9-3-2)
The defending champ Lions defeated Mount de Sales in last year's title match. Second-year Coach Duane Verderaime's Sailor squad handled Maryvale (his former team) both times in the fall, 2-0 and 2-1.
