Annapolis Area Christian and Towson Catholic, the two top teams in the IAAM C Conference during the regular season, will meet for the tournament title Saturday, but the two squads have taken different paths.
In semifinal action Wednesday, Towson Catholic outlasted Glenelg Country School in five games, 16-25, 25-11, 20-25, 25-15 and 15-6, while defending champ Annapolis Area Christian swept Beth Tfiloh, 25-15, 25-12 and 25-9, at the Kilby Athletic Recreation Center in Severn.
Senior Rachael Leight went seven for seven serving and had five digs for Annapolis Area, which has swept its first two playoff competitions. The Red division champ improved to 17-1.
For the second consecutive game, Towson Catholic needed a fifth game to advance, eliminating a Glenelg Country School team it defeated twice (a sweep and four games) during the regular season. The Owls, who were first in the Gold Division, improved to 14-1. Lauren Roepcke led Glenelg Country School with 10 kills and 10 digs and senior middle blocker Kourtney Conyers finished with six kills and three blocks. Emily Sandford (12 digs) and Jackie Li (31 assists) contributed for the Dragons (10-7).
Towson Catholic will attempt to deny Annapolis Area a second straight title Saturday. During the regular season, Annapolis Area handed the Owls their only defeat in straight sets Oct. 5. Towson Catholic will be seeking its first IAAM C crown since 2004.
