POLL CHANGES THIS WEEK:

Old Mill lost to South River in Regionals and dropped from No. 20 to Others Considered. Digital Harbor won three Regional games and moved up to the No. 20 spot. Poly moved from No. 19 to No. 14 with a win over then-No. 8 City in a Region finals game.

Oakland Mills, Fallston and River Hill all lost in Regionals and are in slots 16-20. Dulaney went 3-0 and moved up one spot to No. 16. Atholton went 3-0 and won its Region and jumped up seven spots from No. 14 to No. 7. It’s a bigger jump than some other winning teams, but I may have dropped them down too far after a loss to River Hill a few weeks back. Atholton barely lost in the Howard County title game by three points to No. 4 Mt. Hebron, so the No. 7 spot seems reasonable for now.

Five IAAM teams are in the middle of the rankings and may go up or down next week depending on how some of the public schools fare in state semi’s and finals.

Catonsville dropped from No. 5 to No. 9 after its loss to Western in a Region final. City also lost but stayed at No. 8; City beat Catonsville head-to-head in-season, so with both losing in Region finals, putting the Knights ahead of the Comets made sense. Western and Winters Mill both moved up one spot ahead of Catonsville, and the top four stayed the same.

No. 1 St. Frances went 1-2 and finished sixth at the Bishop Walsh Tournament, and No. 2 Seton Keough went 2-1 and finished third. The two did not meet head to head, as could have happened, so I decided to keep them as is. Seton Keough would have had to either win the tournament (and/or beat Notre Dame Academy) or beat SFA head-to-head to re-claim the No. 1 spot it held before the IAAM finals loss.

After this week’s State play-offs (and 4A final next  Monday), the basketball season is complete. We will be doing a Final Top 20 Poll.  We will also be doing end-of-season All-Metro and All-County teams (for Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Harford, Howard and Baltimore City), so forward any suggestions this week or by March 12th. Thanks!

Note:  The Poll was formulated after consultation with area coaches and informed fans, along with my personal knowledge of area basketball. Strength of schedule IS an important factor.  Our staff will be out in person covering numerous games throughout the season. However, to make it a better Poll, we welcome your comments and suggestions. Please e-mail to Mike Buchanan at:
