Justin McCoy showed some ups Saturday winning the slam dunk contest in pre-game festivities for the annual Maryland-Pennsylvania senior all-star contest. McCoy scored 10 points as Pennsylvania toppled Maryland, 110-100, in Harrisburg.
After
being swept last year, Maryland
garnered a split with Pennsylvania in the annual senior all-star meeting Saturday night at
Steelton-Highspire High in Harrisburg.
The Keystone State
won boys' contest as Josh Proctor from host school and state AAA champ
Steelton-Highspire and Greencastle-Antrim's Dameatric Scott each scored 21
points in an 110-100 decision. Winters Mill's Cammeron Woodyard, who's set to
sign with Penn State University, led Maryland with 17 points, and Marriotts Ridge guard Kevin
Seker added 14, including four three-pointers.
Devon Lesniak (Winters Mill) had 13 points, and Anthony Jones (Atholton) had 12
points and 11 rebounds. Glenelg's Bruce Richardson also had a double-double
with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Obi Ukwuoma (Long Reach) and Mount St. Joseph's Justin McCoy each scored 10. McCoy, a 5-foot-10
guard headed to Coppin State,
won the dunk contest.
In the earlier girls' all-star game, the Maryland
All-Stars jumped out to an early lead and were never threatened, going on to
post a 97-74 win over the Pennsylvania all-stars.
Team Maryland utilized an up-tempo offense fueled by a trapping
half-court man-to-man defense to out run the bigger Pennsylvania squad. Easy transition points eventually led
to eight three-pointers by the MD squad, led by Arika Ullman’s (Seton Keough)
four treys. Ullman led all scorers with 20 points, followed by Becky Cox
(McDonogh) with 17. Coax also added five steals and six assists.
Half of the 10 Maryland players were already
committed to Division I schools. Pennsylvania countered that advantage
with big-time recruits Shawnice Wilson (Pitt) of Pittsburgh Westinghouse and Becky Burke (South Carolina)
of Abington Heights.
Pennsylvania could not match the Maryland chemistry and experience, as numerous players on the team had played together in AAU. Most of
the 15 all-stars from Pennsylvania did not have that luxury,
hailing from areas spread across the state.
