The third time was a championship for Garrison Forest School.
After
two regular season losses to Baltimore Lutheran, the Grizzlies captured
the one that counted most, taking a 5-2 decision yesterday afternoon at
DuBurns Arena for the IAAM B Conference indoor soccer title.
Freshmen
Stephanie Mueller scored a pair of goals for Garrison Forest, and
Hannah Childs, Kara Shetrone and Melissa Pazornik each found the net as
the Grizzlies scored three goals in about a five-minute stretch late in
the second half. It was the first IAAM soccer championship for the
Owings Mills school.
"They knew us, we knew them, it was a 50-50 shot," said Garrison Forest coach John Docherty. "We wanted it more."
The
odds looked to be against the Grizzlies (11-2), who were handled 4-1 on
December 1 and 4-0 on January 19. They adjusted putting Lindsey Zito on
Lutheran's leading scorer Jess Scoggins, who was held scoreless.
Trailing
1-0 at halftime, Lutheran received a goal from Dara Jackson-Garrett in
the 22nd minute. The Saints gained the lead five minutes later, but
Garrison Forest dominated the closing minutes after Mueller scored a
corner kick in the 11th minute.
Mueller, the smallest
performer on the turf, came up huge again putting a grounder past
Lutheran goalie Aimee Chotikul in the sixth minute. Pazornik placed a
shot in the left high corner of the net in the 3rd minute before Childs
got ahead of the Saints" defense to put an exclamation mark on the
championship.
Lutheran coach Dave Merritt said his team was
lacking on defense with Anne Scheeler and Alora Gullivan out since the
previous match with Garrison Forest. In the Saints" semifinal victory
Thursday over Oldfields School, Scoggins was banged up.
"They
were more physical and we're not used to playing that way, but we said
the more physical team would win today," said Merritt, whose team
finished 11-2. "Give Garrison their due for playing and getting into
our heads. We seemed to be timid against their physical play."
Childs
said the Grizzlies played zone against Lutheran and focused on playing
the channel lanes. If looking to redeem itself from the regular season
weren't enough, Garrison Forest played its last game under Docherty,
who's resigning to pursue other interests.
His successor will
be on stable ground with Pazornik the lone senior graduating off this
season's roster. Mueller, Zito, a junior and sophomore Eliza Smithwick
were chosen to the league's all-star team. Lutheran was represented by
Aimee Chotikul, Joci Post and Scoggins.
The remainder of the
team includes Beth T'filoh's Emily Hecht, Caroline Wacker from Bryn
Mawr, Key School's C.J. Corddry, Jessamine Finch and Madeline McCrary,
Oldfields" Danielle Coleman, Annie Issacs and Sarah Nutter, and Senait
Debesu from St. Timothy's. |
