MOUNT DE SALES EDGES NDP FOR SECOND PLACE AT NATIONAL CATHOLIC SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

SPALDING AND IND ALSO REPRESENT IAAM AR VILLANOVA

With the IAAM Swimming Championships looming this Sunday at UMBC, several IAAM teams got into championship form with a trip, over the past weekend, to Villanova University in Philadelphia to compete in the National Catholic Swimming Championships.  For two squads, Mount de Sales and Notre Dame Prep, the competition boiled down to a battle for second place and the Sailors edged the Blazers, 282--279.5, to take that honor in this prestigious 22-team field.  Good Council (DC) ran away with the team title as it amassed 388 points.

Mount de Sales was able to maintain its final edge on Sunday morning when the Sailors placed fifth in the 400 yard relay.  The effort gave it just enough team points to hold off NDP, which actually placed second in the event.

Mount de Sales also produced the IAAM's only individual champion, junior Emily Dean.  Dean won the 100 yard butterfly and placed fourth in the 100 backstroke.  She also swam leadoff for the Sailors' 200 yard medley relay team and anchored the decisive 400 relay unit.  In all, Dean earned 35 individual points, which was the fourth best performance in the entire meet.

The Sailors, who placed third in this event last year and fourth in 2005, also got a big effort from junior Mattie Riley, who finished second in the 50 yard freestyle,  fourth in the 100 yard freestyle and anchored the 200 yard medley relay.

Katie Baust had two second place finishes for NDP in the 100 breaststroke and the 100 freestyle and she swam legs on the third-place 200 yard relay team, as well as the 400 relay squad.

Also for the Blazers, senior Rebecca Goodwin was second in the 500 free and third in the 200 individual medley, while sophomore Maggie Brown was third in the 200 and 500.

St. Mary's was just two points shy of a top 10 finish, as the Saints totaled 59 points to finish 11th, while Archbishop Spalding was 13th with 49.5 points and the Institute of Notre Dame finished 20th with seven points.
