GSw SECT. 8: #2 Hamilton SE sweeps all 12 events at Fishers

FISHERS – Dominant.

That one simple word describes the effort of second-ranked Hamilton Southeastern’s performance Feb. 2 at the Fishers Sectional.

The Royals’ 443 points were more than double that of runner-up No. 42 Fishers (209.5) and the other two ranked teams in the field, No. 10 Yorktown (third with 168) and No. 28 Pendleton Heights (fourth at 152).

“I was really happy with our overall performance,” said Hamilton Southeastern coach Andy Pedersen. “I thought the girls swam terrific today – they came out on a mission and swam with purpose.”

The word dominant may not even be good enough to describe the performance of the Royals. They won every single event during the afternoon and set six pool records.

Of the eight individual events, Hamilton Southeastern finished 1-2 in seven of them and 1-2-3 in two. The only event that a first-/second-place didn’t occur was the 50-yard freestyle, where sophomore Carly Mercer’s championship performance was followed by that of Yorktown senior Kelsi Hall.

“Our team is so experienced,” Pedersen said. “They have a very good approach to the meet and a very businesslike approach to things.

“So I don’t know if I was surprised but more excited to see what is going to happen with these guys.”

Senior Lindsey Rodgers, sophomore Carly Mercer, and junior Maegan O’Connor led the way with two individual victories apiece for the Royals. O’Connor got the fabulous HSE day started off as the opening leg in the 200-yard medley relay, setting the pool record with fellow defending state champion teammates senior Christiana Jacobs, Rogers, and Mercer in a time of 1:45.92.

“I was really pleased with the job of Christiana Jacobs,” Pedersen said. “She swam really unrested all day and swam well.

O’Connor also easily took the 100 butterfly – one of the pair of events where HSE swept the ribbon finishes as sophomore Paige Copeland (:57.70) and sophomore Molly Milborn (:59.99) – and the 100 backstroke in :57.18 and :57.99, respectively.

“All the girls in the 100 butterfly … to have all three girls under one minute is pretty good,” Pedersen said.

Rodgers set her second pool record of the day in the 200 individual medley with a 2:04.69 and concluded her day with a victory in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:03.23 (she’s the defending state runner-up in both events). In addition to the 50 free (:23.20), Mercer also posted a victory in the 100 free (:51.06).

Senior Emily Schroeder won the 500 free in 5:09.24, junior Erin Kelly took the 200 free with a 1:54.40, and senior Sarah Clay nudged out Pendleton Heights senior Krissy Riley in the 1-meter diving competition, 500.50 points to 494.60, to round out HSE’s nine-pack of singular Ws.

Finally, the Royals also took the remaining two relay events – the 200 free relay (Kelley, sophomore Aubrey Hertzler, O'Connor, and Copeland in 1:37.64) and the 400 free relay (Kelley, Copeland, Hertzler, and Schroeder in 3:35.29). HSE swept the relays at last year’s state finals.

The key for Hamilton Southeastern now will be to carry this momentum into the state meet next weekend at the IUPUI Natatorium. The Royals didn’t have their best performance in the Friday preliminaries a year ago, and it affected their final placement as they finished second with 280.5 points compared with champion Carmel’s 330.

“Last year, we swam well Saturday but not Friday,” Pedersen said. “So we want to get consistent and swim well both days.

“The goal is to go out there and swim well and score more points than we did last year.”
