MICHIGANTOWN - This season began in anything but normal fashion for the Lady Knights of Lafayette Central Catholic. The proud LCC girl’s basketball tradition took a beating as the Knights stumbled out of the gate with a 1-6 record.
The slow start was understandable. Lafayette Central Catholic lost much of its scoring to graduation and was desperately looking for leadership. The hope was for improvement as the season progressed. Well, it is safe to say that those hopes are being fulfilled.
A more aggressive and focused Knights squad dismantled Clinton Central Jan. 2 on the latter’s home floor, 41-27. It was a victory spurred by intensity on the defensive end of the floor.
Central Catholic (4-7) used a variety of zone traps in both three-quarter and full court to take the Bulldogs out of their game early. In fact, the Knights shut out Clinton Central in the first quarter, taking a 7-0 lead into the second.
Some adjustments and a little composure on the part of the Bulldogs allowed them to play even through the first half of the second period. However, a 10-2 run by Lafayette Central Catholic late in the quarter gave them a 23-11 cushion at the half.
Much of that spurt was fueled by the play of reserve forward Brittany Adams, who scored eight of her game high ten points during the stanza.
Clinton Central (4-8) made several attempts to cut into the lead in the second half, but never truly threatened. In the fourth period, the Bulldogs would come no closer than ten points. The loss was Clinton Central’s first in the conference and leaves Tri-Central alone at the top of the standings.
Coach Geoff Salmon spoke with Hoosier Authority after the game about his team’s improvement. His comments are in the video box on this page.
