The Fountain Central girls’ basketball team scored a total of nine field goals in their game Monday night against Lafayette Central Catholic. The Mustangs also committed 25 turnovers.  By the way, Fountain Central won the game despite the shortcomings.

This game is the perfect example for every basketball coach’s sermon that it takes no talent to play defense. Fountain Central made up for every offensive mistake, every missed shot, every errant pass, with a tenacious defense that left the Knights players afraid to go to sleep at the end of the evening.

The Mustangs began the game in a sound, sagging man-to-man defense, but then they switched to a 2-3 zone that confounded Central Catholic all game.

Despite going 0-5 from the field and turning the ball over seven times in the first quarter, Fountain Central’s defensive presence had them trialing only 8-4 at the end of the quarter. They used a 6-0 run late in the half to cut what had been an eight point Knights lead midway through the quarter to just three, 15-12 at halftime.

The Mustangs scored the first four points of the third quarter to take a brief 16-15 lead, but when Central Catholic responded with five points of their own, the game seemed in control.

The lead would grow to 26-20 with about six minutes left in the game. Then something crazy happened, the Mustangs found the offense that had been missing all night. They closed the game on a 15-4 run that left the visitors stunned.

Much of that run was due to the strong offensive rebounding of senior post player Kelsy Everett. She repeatedly battled until the play was won in the fourth quarter.

Everett ended the game with 15 points to lead Fountain Central. Jessica Murphy led Central Catholic with ten points.

With the win, Fountain Central improves to 2-5.  Next up for the Mustangs is a trip to North Vermillion on Dec. 6.  Lafayette Central Catholic falls to 1-5 on the season.  Next up for the Knights is a trip to Frontier on Dec. 11.
