The Manchester boys and girls indoor track and field teams continued their dominance for the second straight year.
Both teams repeated as the Dominion District champions at the Arthur Ashe Center on Wednesday.
The Lancers' boys finished with a score of 127.50 to beat out second-place Midlothian (117). Manchester's girls had a score of 167.50 to best the Midlothian girls by 33.50 points.
"We hang in there," Lancers coach
Gene Bowen said after being drenched by his team with water. "We go year by year and do the best we can. We've got a lot of good kids and a lot of good coaches."
Manchester's
Antonio Miller took the triple jump with a distance of 46-2 1/4 to break the oldest district record in the books.
The previous title holder was
Dee Dee Meriweather, of Meadowbrook, who jumped 45-6 1/2 in 1987.
Miller, a senior, also won the long jump by jumping 21-6 1/4 and was named the boys field events athlete of the year.
"I'm very relieved," Miller said about the record. "I've been right at it, a couple inches off for the past few years and this year I spent most of indoor hurt. I mean I had knee problems, hamstring problems, just a lot things going on, so to get back and break this record it just feels great. I thank my coaches, they got me back and I appreciate it."
Midlothian's
Jason Witt also set a district record by completing the 1,000-meter run in 2:37.31. That bested
Billy Berlin, also a Trojan, who ran it in 2:38.05 in 2004. The senior was named the runner of the year.
L.C. Bird's
Andrea Powell was honored as the girls field events athlete of the year and won the high jump with a height of 5-6 to tie the district record held by
Angie Jordan (Clover Hill, 2002).
Girls runner of the year
Briana Stith (Huguenot) took the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.38 and 300-meter dash at 43.67.
Bowen garnered coach of the year honors for both Manchester squads.
