Mount St. Joseph graduate Mack Lewnes won four of six matches as the 165-pound, freshman wrestler for Cornell University, earning fourth place in the NCAA Tournament as well as All-American honors in the three-day event which concluded on Saturday at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri.
Lewnes won his first round bout, 5-3, over Old Dominion's Chris Brown, pinned West Virginia's Donald Jones, and edged Nebraska's Stephen Dwyer, 6-5, before losing his semifinal, 4-0, to Michigan's Eric Tannenbaum.
Lewnes then pinned American University's Michael Cannon in 4:09 of their consolation semifinal bout before dropping a 3-2 decision to Missouri's Nick Marable in their bout for third place.
Cannon, a graduate of Chopticon High in St. Mary's County, went 4-3 in the tournament and also earned All-American honors by placing sixth.
Among Cannon's victories were those over North Carolina's Keegan Mueller, by 6-3; Pennsylvania's Zach Shanaman, by 7-4; Purdue's Luke Manuel, by 3-1, in overtime; and over Iowa State's Jonathan Reider, by 7-6.
