TOMS RIVER -- He always seems to do exactly what he needs to, whether it be for his team or on an individual level. You don't see him get flustered either, which is one of the main reasons Ocean senior Zac Coulas is now a three-time Region VI champion.
On Saturday, Coulas dispatched of a tough customer in the form of Wall's Mike Tancredi to win the 130-pound title. Coulas had takedowns in each of the first two periods to set up an 8-3 victory.
"It feels very good," Coulas said. "I put in a lot of hard work and it's paying off."
Coulas now has his name in the Ocean wrestling record books, joining Kyle Kiss and Jon Frent as the school's only three time champions. The senior had a fairly easy time winning his third title, as he received a bye in the quarterfinals, won by major decision over Matawan's Johnny Short in the semifinals and defeated Tancredi by five in the final. Already considered a favorite to at least reach the final, most expected Coulas to win after Howell's Cody Fobes had to drop out of the tournament due to illness. The pressure never fazed him, however.
"I don't think much about it," Coulas said. "I just have to go one match at a time. The goal is to win a state title and I'll have to do the same thing there.
