Severna Park High School boys lacrosse team to a 11-10 comeback victory at Leonardtown in the Class 4A-3A East Region championship Wednesday.
The Falcons (16-3) will meet Urbana, the West Region champion, in the Class 4A-3A state semifinals Saturday at North Carroll High School. Severna Park, the two-time defending state champions, advances to its fifth consecutive state tournament with the win.
"We were up 5-1 midway through the second period and had all the momentum," said Falcons coach Larry Kramer, whose team had seven different goal scorers. "But they scored a goal and we gave them some life."
Severna Park trailed 7-6 but rallied for a 9-7 lead and held on for the victory.
Senior midfielders Jeff McGuire, Brett Nilsen and Mason Mundell each added two goals for the Falcons. Junior attacker Sam Jones had a goal and an assist while senior Pat Morrison and sophomore Adam MacBride chipped in with a goal apiece.
Junior midfielder Simon Ruppert took every faceoff and won the overall battle for his team, 11-7.
"There we a few penalties called us and then before you knew it, we had a barn-burner on our hands," Kramer said.
Gvozden kept his team in the game with some late saves, Kramer said. The Falcons took 30 shots compared to 29 from Leonardtown and Severna Park scooped seven more ground balls.
