DIGITALSPORTS TOP 20 BOYS LAX POLL

State title games, Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association championships loom

Published: 05/19/2008

HERE'S THE SCOOP: Urbana's Matt Thomas (above), shown digging for a ground ball in an earlier 8-7 victory over Dulaney, will lead the Hawks of Frederick County in Tuesday's Class 4A-3A state title game rematch with the Lions. The Hawks defeated last year's champion, Severna Park, in the semifinals to earn their first championship berth opposite the Lions, who have won seven state titles.

The stage is set for the Class 4A-3A, Class 3A-2A and Class 2A-1A public school Maryland State title games, to be played on Tuesday and Wednesday at UMBC's Stadium in Catonsville.

The same can be said of the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A, B and C Conference finals, to be played on Tuesday at Towson University's Johnny Unitas Stadium.

In the public school states, Urbana of Frederick County will try to repeat its earlier one-goal victory over Dulaney in the Class 4A-3A state finals, while Hereford of Baltimore County plays in the Class 3A-2A state final opposite Walkersville of Frederick County, and Glenelg of Howard County takes on Southern of Anne Arundel County in Class 2A-1A.

In the MIAA, Gilman will try to dethrone defending A Conference titlist Loyola, John Carroll looks to do the same with defending B Conference champ Archbishop Curley, and Cardinal Gibbons, in its third straight C Conference title game, will try to defeat St. Johns Catholic Prep.

Also, DeMatha of Hyattsville easily won its ninth Washington Catholic Athletic Conference title, 18-3, over Good Counsel last week, and Landon of Bethesda captured the Interstate Athletic Conference Tournament crown, 5-1, over St. Stephens-St. Agnes.

DigitalSports will post its final Top 20 next week.
