Annapolis High School senior Leah Pinkney (black jersey) was named MVP for the South team at the Anne Arundel County senior All-Star game last week.
Female Athlete of the Week
Leah Pinkney
Annapolis High School
girls basketballPinkney finished with 13
points, 12 rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots to lead the
South team to a 76-67 victory over the North team at the 20th annual
Anne Arundel County Senior All-Star game at North County High School last
Tuesday.
The
lead changed hands five times in the third quarter before Pinkney's first 3-pointer of the season banked off the glass and fell through the net. Her team never
relinquished the lead after that.
"It was my first 3-pointer of the season and I wanted to shoot another
but I never got the ball again," said Pinkney, who was named the South
team MVP. "I didn't want everyone to think it was a lucky shot."
Luck had nothing to do with it. It was all about timing for Pinkney.
After
catching a pass from Annapolis teammate Jessica Reagans (10 points),
Pinkney knocked down the trey to extend the South's slim one-point lead
with 2:52 left in the third period. Another 3-pointer, this time from
Broadneck's Chelsea Shrader, opened a 52-48 lead the South would take
into the fourth.
Pinkney has led the Panthers in rebounding the last two years and is a DigitalSports All-Anne Arundel County girls
basketball honorable mention. She hasn't decided on her college future yet.
