Senior Lauren Battista, sophomore Ashley Thomas and junior Avery Gabbard each had two hits to lead the
Broadneck High School softball team to a 9-0 victory over visiting
Glen Burnie in the Class 4A East Region semifinals Thursday.
The third-seeded Bruins (21-3) will visit No. 1
Chesapeake -- a
3-0 winner over
Arundel
-- in the region finals Friday at 4 p.m. It will be the third meetings
between the teams this season and a rematch of last year's region
championship, which the Cougars won en route to a state title.
"Ashley sort of got us started offensively and Kourtney (Salvarola)
didn't give them too many chances to come back on us," said Broadneck
coach Jim Ware, whose team scored four runs in the second inning and
five in the fourth.
"I think we sort of overwhelmed them early. Kourtney had her way with them on the mound, too."
Salvarola finished with 10 strikeouts and gave up two hits and a walk for a complete-game shutout.
Thomas belted a triple to left field in the second inning to score
Salvarola and Battista. She would later score on the play when the
Gophers' defense overthrew the cutoff. Thomas finished with three RBIs and senior catcher Megan Heins drove in two. Salvarola and Tomas scored two runs, apiece.
"Erica Kinney pitched well against us," Ware said. "That was as good as I've seen her all year."
Kinney fanned four and gave up eight hits and had seven walks.
Ware said his team is looking forward to its third meeting with
Chesapeake. The Bruins nipped the Cougars in the regular season and
beat them again in the Anne Arundel County championship,
4-2.
"I think the girls enjoy going against each other," Ware said. "It's a
good challenge for us because we know that we have to get through them
to prove we can compete with the top teams in the state."
