Old Mill’s speed leads the Patriots to men’s team title and North Carroll women score close victory over CH Flowers at the Loyola Invitational

Not only did the athletes and coaches have to battle a strong wind and cold temperatures this Saturday morning, but also the problem of missing athletes. The Easter/Spring break season led to a number of defections from the teams due to family vacations.

Archbishop Curley’s head coach Gene Hoffman said, “Can we just make Spring break on August 14 next year?”. Coach Hoffman explained that he was missing two of his key athletes again this weekend and probably wouldn’t be at full strength for a couple of weeks.

Dulaney’s Chad Boyle had the same problem. “I had a lot of scratches today and not a lot of kids at practice this past week”, said Boyle.

The Old Mill Patriots behind wins from Teyeon Jones in the 100 (11.50), Shane Cox in the 200 (22.50) and the 400 Relay (43.9) came away with the win (90 pts) over surprising Loyola with 74. Also contributing to Old Mill’s victory was second place finishers Shawn Zimmerman, discus (120-10), Anthony Edwards 110 hurdles (15.50) and the 800 meter relay (1:34.5) and 1600 meter relay (3:29.6).

Gilman started off the day with a ten second win over CH Flowers who held the lead through the first two legs with splits of 2:05.5 and 2:06.7. Gilman moved into the lead with two powerful third and fourth legs with splits of 2:01.7 and 2:01.1. Joe Orsulak, who has been suffering with a virus that has affected his ability to blink, brought Loyola way back to almost catch Flowers on the anchor leg with a sub 2:00 clocking.

1600 RELAY SPLITS
Gilman also won the boys 1600 relay with a strong anchor leg that caught Old Mill in the last 30 meters winning in 3:29.2.
Pat Boyle of Calvert Hall was a double winner in the throws winning the shot put by 10 feet with a throw of 54-03.5 and also the discus, 121-03. Dwayne Powell went 22-02 in the long jump despite a strong wind and Conrad Merke of Gilman went over 12-06 in the pole vault.

Corey Hancock of Dulaney made a statement with a PR of 4:32.2 for second place behind winner Anthony Rowe of Calvert Hall in 4:31.3. Hancock then came back later in the afternoon to win the 800 on the homestretch after letting Pat Hairfield of Curley lead for the first 700 meters. Hancock won in 2:03.8 after going through the opening 400 in 63.9.

Arthur Leathers of Francis Scott Key was third in the 1600 in 4:35.9 and then led the 3200 from wire to wire winning in 10:00.0, beating teammate Jordan White by two seconds. Calvert Hall finished 3rd, 6th and 7th in the race with Chris Swisko leading the Cardinals at 10:13. Splits for Leathers (72.5, 76.7, 74.7, 77.6 (5:02.0), 76.1, 76.1, 75.5, 70.3)

The host team also posted a win with John Davenport in the 400 at 50.3 holding off Evan Bryant of Gilman by 0.4 second.

The ladies from North Carroll won their version of the meet by dominating all other teams in the field events and top placings in the sprint events. They held off pre-meet favorites CH Flowers by three points and McDonogh by seven.

North Carroll got wins from Catiln Bach in the shot put (33-05.5), Sophie Thomas, pole vault (9-00), Anne Melville, high jump (5-00) and Alexis Hurd in the 200 (25.4). Hurd also had a second in the long jump (17-01) as did Mary Dornberger, triple jump (33-11) and the 3200 relay (10:18.7).

1600 RELAY SPLITS
CH Flowers placed 1-2 in the 300 hurdles behind Lorraine Graham (48.3) and Tiahana Dorn (48.6). They also won the 3200 and 1600 relays (10:10.1 and 4:12.1). (3200 relay splits – 2:27.5, 2:36.8, 2:35.7, 2:29.4). Lorraine Graham won the long jump at 17-03.75.

Kristen Brown of McDonogh showed her domination in the 100 meter hurdles with a 1.1 second win over Nina Boston of South Carroll.
