In a pitcher's duel that had a true championship feel, the #1-ranked St. Louis Crusaders held off the upset-minded Kamehameha Warriors, 2-1, in the second round of the double elimination ILH tournament Tuesday night at Hans L'Orange Park in Waipahu.
Noah Siegfried and reliever Chris Chung fashioned a brilliant two-hitter as Chung picked up the victory. The Warriors' Alika Pruett, who tossed a five-hit complete game himself, was the hard-luck losing pitcher.
The key for the Crusaders was their ability to stop the Warriors' aggressive base-running. Three times on the night, St. Louis catcher Moses Samia nailed Warrior would-be base stealers and once Chung picked off a runner himself. That's four Warrior runners who were gunned down on the base paths.
Keoki Lopez scored both runs for St. Louis, including the eventual game-winner in the fourth inning. He was driven home on an rbi singles by Cole Shidaki and Kaden Kamoe. Shidaki was the leading hitter for the game, going 2-for-3 at the plate.
Kamehameha actually grabbed the lead with a run in the top of the first inning. Jacob Meyer was driven home by Kalei Hanawahine to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead, but the Crusaders rallied to tie it in the bottom of the second and then took the lead for good in the fourth inning.
Winning pitcher Chung was brilliant in relief, coming in out of the bullpen in the third inning and striking out five batters while walking three the rest of the way. St. Louis continues in winners' bracket play, while the Warriors suffered their first tournament loss and fall into the losers' bracket. St. Louis previously won the ILH regular season title.
