Mount St. Joseph's Dan Michalek shot an opening round 73 at Pine Ridge Golf Course, yesterday, to take the early lead in the 2008 MIAA Individual Golf Championships, yesterday. Michalek holds to a one shot advantage over Gilman's Matt Mighty, who shot a 74 at Mount Pleasant Golf Course.
With the field equally split between Pine Ridge and Mount Pleasant, John Mlynarski of Saints Peter & Paul and Ben Shields of Loyola directly followed Michalek at Pine Ridge, each shooting rounds of 75, while Jason Clatworthy of St. Vincent Pallotti and Dave Nastalski each posted rounds of 76.
At Mount Pleasant, Ryan Lee-Young of McDonogh scored a 76, while Gilman's Brad Miller, who competed in last year's U.S. Junior Amateur, was one of six golfers who finished at 77.
The top 20 golfers, plus ties, at each course yesterday qualified for today's second round. The golfers are scheduled to switch courses, as they attempt to qualify for tomorrow's final round at Old South Country Club.
Rain, however, threatens today's action. The MIAA has said it will make every effort to play today and will go forward in the rain, if the courses are open and no hazardous conditions exist. Players should come prepared to deal with the elements.
However, if today's action is cancelled, tomorrow's final round will proceed as scheduled. Yesterday's qualifiers will be pared to just the top 10 finishers, plus ties, from each course and the tournament will be decided on the basis of just two rounds.
