#1 Singles
Unfortunately, Caroline Capute
was not able to take the court for her final high school match. Her opponent,
#2-seed Ally Lozinak, from John Carroll, was unable to play due to injury, so
Capute won by default.
Capute breezed through the
quarter-finals and semi??s, winning by 6-0, 6-0 in both matches. The senior went
undefeated in the regular season. She completed a stellar career ?? actually a
perfect one ?? by going 33-0 and winning four straight B-Conference #1 Singles
titles. Someone else will get a chance
next year.
??Caroline is just so good;
she had even beaten every A-Conference opponent she??s faced. If we played a team we knew we would beat,
I??d sometimes hold Caroline out to give the opponent a chance and make it a
competitive match, and give one of our other girls a chance to compete,? siad
Friends Coach Bob Campbell.
#2 Singles
John Carroll??s Elly Dannenfelser
(#1-seed) and Severn??s Katie Dickerson (#2-seed) had the closest battle of the
afternoon, going toe to toe for over two hours, before Dannenfelser outlasted
her opponent to win 7-6 and 7-5. Dannenfelser??s
win was instrumental in helping John Carroll win the overall team point total. #1 Doubles
Casey Davis and Michelle Ventura,
the top seeds, are on a similar roll at #1 Doubles as Capute was in singles.
The pair won at #3 Doubles as freshmen, won again at #2 Doubles as sophomores
last year, and continued the streak, winning at #3 Doubles on Monday. They
posted a 6-4, 6-3 straight-set win over Macks/Shiras from Park.
Like Capute, Davis and Ventura went undefeated in the regular season without
dropping a set. And they have not lost in high school, compiling a 33-0 record
to date. When asked what they could
do for an encore next year, the pair responded, ??We hope to move up to
A-Conference and win some matches there.
#2 Doubles
At #2 Doubles, the
second-seed pair of Gordon/Eisenstein from Park defeated the top-seed duo of
Zimmerman/Mangan from St. Paul??s
SFG, 6-4, 6-4, in another long match with extended
volleys and points.
#3 Doubles
At #3 Doubles, the un-seeded
pair of Thomas/Hamilton ensured a John Carroll team win with a 6-1, 6-4 win
over Wohl/Perkins from Friends. The Patriot duo had taken out the top seeds in
the semi-finals.
