#1 Singles
Katz had reached the finals
in each of the last two years, and lost to Bryn Mawr??s Annie Wu both times.
This year, Katz continually improved her game with off-season work, and it paid
off with a title of her own.
Katz ousted friend and
sometimes summer doubles partner Erica Choo (Bryn Mawr), 6-2, 6-1.
When asked about her
victory, Katz said ??Yeah, it??s nice. I didn??t get nervous; I just got more
excited. It??s nice to come off as a winner.? #2 Singles
Roland Park made it a clean
sweep in Singles, as #2-seed Ellie deMuth defeated NDP??s Kasey Harvey in three
sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Harvey also went three sets in the quarter-finals last week
in a win over McDonogh??s Lauren Cassel. She and deMuth staged a similar duel,
with speed to track down many shots that others might not get to, making for
long volleys and extended points.
#1 Doubles
Gussie MacLaughlin and
Maggie Li became the first Bryn Mawr pair to win a doubles title in nine years,
as the senior duo defeated Roland Park??s Lambert/Gordon in straight sets, 6-3,
6-2. The Bryn Mawr team was the #1-seed after going undefeated in the regular
season. #2 Doubles
The surprise of the day came
in the #2 Doubles match, where unseeded Feldman/Gottsch came away with a huge
6-4, 6-4 win over the top-seeded pair of Heitmiller/Laschinger from NDP.
Bryn Mawr Coach Kate
Brendler was elated over the win. ??This was a major upset. Jenna (Feldman) and Clare (Gottsch) went 5-5 in the
regular season, and then in the tournament they beat the #2 seeds (Morrison/Quinn from McDonogh) and
then took down the #1 seeds. They really earned it? #3 Doubles
NDP??s Coronna/Jordan claimed
the #3 Doubles crown with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Procopio/Johnso from Mount
de Sales. A week ago in the regular-season finale, these four battled to
darkness before the NDP pair finally won. They nearly did it again yesterday,
being the tenth - and last - of the ten A and B matches to end.
