Lacey Shuman opened the IAAM season with fireworks, skyrocketing over 5-feet, 4-inches in high jump, to get a win for Maryvale Prep, while McDonogh edged Seton Keough for the team victory, in the first indoor track group meet at season, Saturday at Hagerstown Community College.
Shuman posted what is believed to be the highest ever IAAM indoor mark in winning by 6-inches over teammate Emma Rakosky, 4-10. The pair proved the class of the field. Rakosky led early with clean jumping through 4-10, but after a miss at that height, it was all Shuman, as her teammate could go no higher. There was also depth in the event as 13 jumpers cleared 4-6 or better.
In the 14-team competition, McDonogh amassed 103.75 points to top defending champ Seton Keough, which scored 100.5. Third place Mount de Sales (46 points) finished well behind the leaders.
The Eagles soared early building a 54.75-16.5 lead over Keough with wins in the opening four events. McDonogh ran off firsts in the 4x800 (10:51.0); 55 hurdles (Kristen Brown 8.5); 55 dash (Amanda Kimbers, 7.1); and 4x200 (1:52.1).
The Gators nearly closed the gap with wins in the final four events, Colleen Shean (800, 2.33.4); Erin Brooks (300, 43.5); Katie Sacker (3,200, 12.17.1); and Chelsea Tavik (shot put, 36-1.75) all claimed victories.
Other winners were: Becky Boulay of Mount de Sales (500, 1:22.6); Erin Laschinger of Notre Dame Prep (1,600, 5.28.3); and Lindsay Pisanic of Mount de Sales (pole vault, 7-0).
The next IAAM group meet is December 14 at the Prince Georges Sports and Learning Complex.
