A HAPPY MISCALCULATION ADDS UP TO THE IAAM INDOOR TRACK TITLE FOR SETON KEOUGH

The numbers kept coming up close. Seton Keough�??s indoor track coaching staff spent Thursday evening estimating where the Gators would place at the IAAM Championship meet. They figured either tying for first or fall a couple of points short.

They were happily wrong on both accounts. Everything fell right for the Gators, who dethroned McDonogh, yesterday evening at the Prince George�??s Sports and Learning Complex.

�??If we had our night, we could do it,�?� said Seton Keough coach Jim Lancaster. �??With that being said, I knew if we ran our race, if the ball bounced our way, we had a legitimate shot at pulling this off.�?�

Lancaster thought 140 points would win the meet. The Gators accumulated 145 to pass McDonogh�??s 129. A year ago, the Eagles had 145 points en route to a 79-point victory over Seton Keough.

The West Baltimore school made up that gap, and then some, getting first-place performances from juniors Colleen Shea and Erin Brooks. Brooks won the 55 in 7.17 seconds and set the finals�?? mark in the triple jump (36-feet, 11 inches). In about a half-hour window, Shea won the 500 (1:21.27) and 800 (2:29.9).

She teamed with seniors Katie Sacker, Megan McQuillan and Alyssa Doyle on the winning 3,200 relay (10:18.4). Doyle placed first in the 3,200 (11:50.05) while Lindsay Wilson and Sacker placed third and fifth, respectively, giving the Gators the cushion needed to hold back McDonogh.

The Eagles, the area�??s top-ranked team, received successful title defenses from seniors Christina Barnett (55 hurdles; 9.13), Brooke Staton (long jump; 16-10.75) and Chante Sandiford (shot put; 39-8.5) and sophomore Jameice DeCoster (300; 40.68). Stanton, juniors Alex Davis and Gloria Ogunsola, and sophomore Amanda Kimbers established a new mark in the 800 relay (1:46.83). The Owings Mills school retained the 1,600 relay championship (4:15.99) with Staton, Ogunsola, DeCoster and freshman Myerre Osinumwan.

Bryn Mawr senior Alexandra Tanner won the high jump (5 feet), and John Carroll junior Erika Stasakova placed first in the 1,600 (5:24.95). Stasakova was sixth in the event a year ago.

For Seton Keough, winning the IAAM Indoor Championship didn�??t seem possible four years ago when they finished last in the finals in its inaugural season. Brooks, runner-up in the 300, was almost left speechless.  

It�??s amazing,�?� said Brooks, whose teammate Megan Voorhees won the pole vault (7-6). �??Our team was fired up. We got two new coaches and in everybody�??s mind we thought we got more people to pay attention to us, so we can do better. Everybody�??s confidence level was way way up, and we won."
