Syracuse University freshman and recent Towson Catholic graduate Donte Greene had a sensational college basketball debut this week, combining for 42 points in a pair of exhibition games.
Greene, a McDonald's All-American who led TC to the MIAA A Conference and Baltimore Catholic League finals last year along with Virginia Tech freshman Malcolm Delaney, made his debut on Sunday and scored 16 points in an 80-71 victory over St. Rose.
Starting at forward, the 6-10 Greene hit six of 13 shots, including 3-of-7 from beyond the three point arc and grabbed seven rebounds in 33 minutes. He followed that with 26 points, in just 23 minutes, as the Orange romped over LeMoyne, 109-59, last night. In this contest, Greene sank four three-pointers and had four rebounds.
"He can score, he is a good shooter and he is getting a lot of good open looks and that’s all good,” said Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim of his prized recruit from Baltimore. “We’ll face teams that will be physical with him and bang him around and he’ll have to get adjusted to that once we get into those games.”
Part of an outstanding freshman class, Greene feels Syracuse has a bright future ahead.
“We’re young, but we’re very talented. Myself, Rick, Jonny and Scoop were all top 50 players coming in, we’re not slouches. We come, we work hard, we’re ready to play and we’re going to bring it back to the ‘Cuse,” said Greene. “We’ve played with each other over the summers, so we had chemistry before we got here. Now it’s just putting it together with everyone else and coming together as a team and try to go back to the tournament.”
