Baltimore is represented in the 2008 NBA Finals as
Dunbar grad Sam Cassell helps Boston try to win its first Championship since 1987. A 15-year veteran, Cassell came off the bench for the Celtics and added eight points in Boston's 98-88 Game One victory over Los Angeles on Thursday.
"Sam I Am" as he is often called, won two NBA Championships with the Houston Rockets in 1994 and 1995 seasons. Along with Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen, Cassell and Celtics are hoping to return to basketball prestige.
After Cassell graduated from Dunbar, he attended a junior college in Texas then moved on to Florida State in the ACC. He was a first round draft pick to the Rockets.
Last season's Poet squad didn't have the big names on the roster such as Cassell, Keith Booth and Mugsy Bogues but they won the
Class 1A North Regional Title and advanced to the State Semifinals before falling to Fort Hill. Next year's Dunbar team returns all but one player, graduating senior Richard Brown.
Rising senior forward Sean Farr returns as the leading scorer as he averaged 17 points and eight rebounds per game. Classmate Tavon Austin averaged 13 points and seven assists per game as the point guard. Underclassman guards Darrell Edwards and sharp-shooting Roderick Camphor return to boaster the scoring. Behind second-year coach Cyrus Jones, Dunbar looks to return to the State Playoffs and basketball prominence in Baltimore City.
