NEW MARKET - All the things that were going right for the Southmont softball team and thier record-breaking start ended up going wrong Thursday night against Sagamore Athletic Conference foe Tri-West.
Three Mounties' errors lead to two unearned runs and a 3-0 loss to the Bruins, the first loss suffered by Southmont this season.
For the second night in a row, Southmont (7-1, 4-1 SAC) faced Tri-West (2-7, 2-4 SAC) sophomore pitcher Anna Warren. The Mounties pounded out 12 hits on Wednesday, but could only muster four hits on Thursday.
"This is the worst game we've played all year," Southmont coach Curt Brown said. "I can take a loss if I feel like we were outplayed. It's a little tougher to swallow if you did some things to beat yourself. And you didn't do the things you need to do."
Tri-West went on top early as a sacrifice bunt play ended with two throwing errors and a Bruins' runner scoring from first.
The only earned Tri-West run came in the third. The Bruins also scored in the fourth inning.
Southmont junior pitcher Jami Addler threw a good game. But she didn't have defensive or offensive support.
Twenty-one of her first 22 pitches went for strikes resulting in five-straight strikeouts and she finished with 12 total.
"Jami threw the ball well," Brown said. "She always throws the ball well. We just didn't do enough to back her up. At the beginning of the year, any one of these girls would have told you that they would take winning seven of their first eight games. We've done that against some good competition, too."
The Mounties now have their first loss of the season and have become one of, at least, four teams with one conference loss.
Southmont will take on Fountain Central today at home.
