Bishop Ireton placed 6 players on the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) All Conference First team for 2009.  Senior midfielders Ashton Hellmuth (Lehigh), Claire Banta (Virginia), defenders Lauren Gray (Georgetown), Heather Olson (St. Joseph’s) and attacks Maria Bowman (Villanova) along with junior Janet Tela comprise the largest group of Cardinals to be selected for first team honors in program history.

 

Senior Goaltender Bridget Corridon (Virginia Tech), senior defender Brittany Barnwell (Queens) and sophomore midfielder Sarah Rupp were recognized with Second Team all WCAC honors.  Senior Midfielder Allie Fife (Mount St. Mary’s), senior attack Chesney Hellmuth (Ole Miss), senior defender Rachel Gartlan (Virginia Tech) and sophomore defender Kathryn Simmons were named to the Honorable Mention All WCAC team.

 

Ireton finished second in the WCAC regular season at 6-1 and lost in double overtime to 6 time champion Good Counsel 12-11 int eh WCAC Championship game played at the University of Maryland.  The Cardinals, 19-3 overall are the #2 seed and play #3 Potomac in the Virginia State Independent School Championship Semi Finals today at Episcopal High School.  The semi final winner will face the winner of #1 St. Stephens and #4 Collegiate for the Virginia Division I State title Saturday at 2PM again at Episcopal High School.
