C.J. Fair scored 20 points, leading No. 18 City College to a 52-39
victory over No. 16 Cardinal Gibbons in a non-league matchup Friday
evening. The Knights ran their record to 3-0 while Gibbons dropped its
fourth straight decision after a 3-0 start.
City, which plays No. 7 Lake Clifton Tuesday, led by as many as 18
points in the second half. The Knights have only two seniors their
roster.
"We're still young and make a lot of mistakes," said City coach Mike
Daniel. "The kids are playing hard and we're making things happen."
The Knights set the pace early, leading 13-2 after the opening quarter,
and 26-10 at halftime. Fair, a six-foot, seven inch sophomore, had 15
points in the first 16 minutes.
City extended the lead to 28-10 on a basket by Adam Johnson. The
Crusaders of the MIAA A Conference and Baltimore Catholic League pulled
to within nine after a steal and a dunk by Justin Koontz but two free
throws by Quentin Goodwin and a steal and layup by Fair pushed the
cushion back to double digits.
Koontz led Gibbons with nine
points. The Crusaders will play McDonogh School Sunday afternoon.
