JAYVEE CHAMPIONSHIPS RESULTS
A very warm and sunny day at Winters Mill High School near Westminster. Coming up Gorsuch Road, the thermometer on the nearby bank read 82 degrees. The temperature on the track was even warmer as is the tmeperature on the track. We might be live, having luckily secured a wifi line off the local Days Inn. I'm not sure how much video, interviews or pictures we'll be able to take since I've been relegated to the press box and our other RM staffers have been dispatched to other meets.
The first event of the day is the trials of the 100 and 200 dash and the hurdles. Girls 100 dash heat winners - 1st Alexis Hurd, North Carroll 12.9; 2nd Cody Mezebish, South Carroll 13.1; Renee Norris, Westminster 13.1. Boys 100 dash heat winners - 1st Issa Connell, North Carroll 11.3; 2nd Brad Martz, FSK 11.2; 3rd David Thomas, FSK 11.2 All the heats for the 100 dash were won by large margins by the winners of the heat. Boys 110 hurdles heat winners - 1st Irving Jeffries, FSK 16.3 followed by Mark Young, North Carroll; 2nd heat Evan Huggins, Winters Mill 16.4. Girls 100 hurdles heat winners - 1st Amanda Gate, Westminster pulls away from Ameerah Jones in the last two hurdles winning in 16.4; 2nd heat Nina Boston, South Carroll leads Molly Timberlake of Liberty across the line in 16.2.
In the trials of the 200, the top two finishers of each heat plus the next two fastest times will advance to the final. Girls 200 dash trials - 1st Hurd leads Terzah Bartley of Westminster and Jess Cocatell of South Carroll in an eased up 27.2; 2nd Only 3 girls in the second heat as Mezebish wins in 29.1 over Teal Koch, Winters Mill; 3rd Amber Melville of North Carroll wins by 8 meters over Olivia Caspar of Century in 27.4. Boys 200 dash trials - 1st 1st Connell in a very eased up 23.3 over Trevor White of Liberty; 2nd Martz in 23.0 with Myron Dixon in second five meters back; 3rd Thomas wins in 23.0, but Chris Patrice of Liberty in second kept it interesting.
Girls 3200 Relay - SPLITS - Six teams on the line and Century and Winters Mill pulls way on the first lap with Winters Mill taking the lead at the 400. Winters Mill hands off in 2:33.4 with a three second lead over Century. Century takes the lead 200 meters into the second leg. WM grabs the lead back with 200 to go and extends it to 10 meters at the handoff. South Carroll is closing quickly on the leaders. Coming up with 200 to go, WM, Century, SC and Liberty are all coming in together at the handoff. Liberty comes around the outside to handoff in the lead with Century. Century and Liberty go out hard hitting the first 400 in 1:08.3. Century goes into the lead entering the backstretch and starts to pull away. South Carroll is coming back on Liberty. Century keeps pulling away for the win in 10:07.4. Liberty just holds off SC for second.
Boys 3200 Relay - SPLITS - Liberty takes it to Century right from the opening gun hitting the first 400 in 59.4. Liberty keeps the pressure on and opens up a lead on the back stretch and comes in with a 10 meter lead finishing in 2:02 and change. Liberty's second leg runs a fast first 400, but Century is closing on the backstretch. Winters Mill is running a strong second leg with NC, Westminster and FSK not far behind. Winters Mill running strong on the third leg early trying to catch Liberty. Liberty has a 25 meter lead and growing halfway through the third leg. WM and Century working together to go after Liberty, but Eric Liberatore has a good lead and is still pushing on the last leg. With 200 to go Liberatore's head is bobbing up and down and is struggling, but still has a big lead over WM. Liberty wins in 8:14.4
In the Girls 100 hurdle finals, Nina Boston of S. Carroll came away with the win in 15.5 after a poor start that put her behind second place finisher Amanda Gate of Westminster and third place Ameerah Jones of Westminster. Boston caught the other two girls at the fifth hurdle and pulled away. Gate got ahead of Jones in the last two hurdles. Evan Huggins of Winters Mill won the Boys 100 hurdles final leading from the gun in 15.9. Irving Jeffries of FSK and teammate Travis Miller finished second and third. Alexis Hurd of N. Carroll won the Girls 100 dash final easily in 12.6. Cody Mezebish, S. carroll eeked out Renee Norris of Westminster for second. In a close race Issa Connell, N. Carroll holds off Brad Martz, FSK in 10.8 seconds in the Boys 100 dash final.
In the Girls 1600 Maura Linde of Century took a quick lead over the field passing the 400 in 1:12.8 with Rachel Sykes of South Carroll second coming through in 1:15.6. At the 800, Linde was maintaining her lead at 2;31.6. Sykes had fallen six seconds back and another ten seconds back at 2:46.8 was Catherine Robinson of S. Carroll. Linde had maintained her six second lead at 1200 in 3:55.2 and was opening up the pace on the last 400. She came across the line winning in 5:11.6. Sykes held on for second in 5:22.9. Molly Donovan of North Carroll had a good kick the last 100 and sneaked in front of Robinson at the line in 5:34.6.
Arthur Leathers came into the Boys 1600 with the fastest seed time of 4:26 run at the FSK Invitational a few weeks ago, but Jake Zamostny of S. Carroll had closed the gap at the MVAL conference meet a few days ago. At the start, Leathers was calmly leading the race with the other two favorites on his shoulder. The leaders passed the 400 in 1:08.9. Those three had pulled away from Jim Kelly of Winters Mill who was back in fourth. At the 800, the top three were still together passing the halfway point at 2:17.8. Leathers picks up the pace on the backstretch of the third lap and White falls two steps back. Leathers hits 1200 in 3:26.8 with Zamostny on his back, but at the gun, Leathers opens up and the S. Carroll runner doesn't answer. White is making a move for second with 200 to go. Leathers comes away with the win in 4:32.6. White comes up for second in 4:34.5 and Zamostny keeps third in 4:38.7.
Westminster ran away with the Girls 800 relay in 1:49.4, while North Carroll ran down FSK in the last 50 meters to win the Boys 800 Relay in 1:30.9.
Girls 400 dash heat winners - 1st Christina Justice, Westminster 1:07.8; 2nd Kate Herholz, Liberty 1:06.2; 3rd Katie Crumbaugh of North Carroll wins in 59.6 with a big lead over Alexandra Passamichalis of North Carroll Boys 400 dash heat winners - 1st Andrew Parker, Winters Mill 58.2; 2nd Ben Raver, North Carroll 53.1; 3rd Brad Boyd of Century runs down Rashaud Lyles of S. Carroll in the last 20 meters in 51.2.
In the Girls 3200 Maura Linde led from start to finish passing the 1600 in 5:47.9 and winning by a big margin in 11:42.7
Boys 3200 - Lap Leaders - 400 Leathers, FSK (1:13.54); 800 (1:14.8/2:28.4); 1200 (1:17.6/3:46.1) White of FSK running on his shoulder, 40 meters back to third, Taylor of Westminster; 1600 (1:18.3/5:04.3); 2000 (1:18.4/6:22.9); 2400 (1:20.7/7:43.4); 2800 (1:20.5/9:03.8); 3200 White seems to pass Leathers at the line (1:08.1/10:11.9)
