The Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association has released its fifth set of softball rankings for the 2008 season, and your new No. 1s this week are Mishawaka Marian in Class 3A and Whiting in 1A.

The Knights take over from previous 3A leader Edgewood (now second), while the 2006 1A state champion Oilers assume the top spot in the state’s smallest class from defending state champion Indianapolis Lutheran (also now second). Center Grove (a record four state titles) and Indianapolis Scecina (the defending 2A champ), meanwhile, maintain the top spots in 4A and 2A, respectively.

Carmel opens some eyes this week by leaping from seventh to second in 4A, setting up an extremely juicy 1-2 battle with Center Grove for the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference title May 6 at the latter.

Among other significant movers are Crawfordsville, which moves from ninth to sixth in 3A, and Boone Grove and Eastern (Pekin), which move from 10th and 11th to sixth and seventh, respectively, in 2A.

Teams are listed by rank followed by school, first-place votes (if applicable), rating points, and record. Here are your 90 ranked schools from May 5 (and yes, sports fans, those are twenty-eight teams ranked in 1A):
