The Martinsville girls tennis collected a 5-0 win over visiting
Edgewood on Monday afternoon to improve to 4-6 on the season. The
Artesians completely dominated the Mustangs, as the Martinsville girls
surrendered only 13 games in the five matches that were contested.
Martinsville junior Carly Cramer set the tone for the meet when
she throttled Edgewood’s Emily O’Mally 6-1, 6-2 at no. 1 singles.
Junior Alex Kirchner then blanked the Mustangs’ Hannah Douglas 6-0, 6-0
at no. 2 singles to give the Artesians a 2-0 lead.
Martinsville sophomore Katie O’Neal downed her Edgewood
opponent, Samantha Lewis, at no. 3 singles by a 6-2, 6-0 score to
secure the win for the Artesains. Juniors Caitie Miller and Alyssa
Elsner added to the Martinsville team total with a 6-0, 6-0 drubbing of
Megan Wright and Jennifer Horne at no. 1 doubles, and senior Ginny
Lobianco and junior Jessika Swafford teamed at no. 2 doubles for
Martinsville to win over Edgewood’s Stephanie Emmons and Morgan Pruitt
by a 6-4, 6-4 margin in the most competitive match of the day.
“We played well,” indicated Martinsville coach Jeff Mcgown.
“Our singles players and no. 1 doubles breezed through their matches,
and our no. 2 doubles team struggled, but they came out with the win.”
The Artesians will be in Bloomington on Thursday to take on the
North high school Cougars in a meet that gets underway at 4:30 p.m.
