MARTINSVILLE

The Martinsville girls tennis collected a 5-0 win over visiting Edgewood on Monday afternoon to improve to 4-6 on the season. The Artesians completely dominated the Mustangs, as the Martinsville girls surrendered only 13 games in the five matches that were contested.

Martinsville junior Carly Cramer set the tone for the meet when she throttled Edgewood’s Emily O’Mally 6-1, 6-2 at no. 1 singles. Junior Alex Kirchner then blanked the Mustangs’ Hannah Douglas 6-0, 6-0 at no. 2 singles to give the Artesians a 2-0 lead.

Martinsville sophomore Katie O’Neal downed her Edgewood opponent, Samantha Lewis, at no. 3 singles by a 6-2, 6-0 score to secure the win for the Artesains. Juniors Caitie Miller and Alyssa Elsner added to the Martinsville team total with a 6-0, 6-0 drubbing of Megan Wright and Jennifer Horne at no. 1 doubles, and senior Ginny Lobianco and junior Jessika Swafford teamed at no. 2 doubles for Martinsville to win over Edgewood’s Stephanie Emmons and Morgan Pruitt by a 6-4, 6-4 margin in the most competitive match of the day.

“We played well,” indicated Martinsville coach Jeff Mcgown. “Our singles players and no. 1 doubles breezed through their matches, and our no. 2 doubles team struggled, but they came out with the win.”

The Artesians will be in Bloomington on Thursday to take on the North high school Cougars in a meet that gets underway at 4:30 p.m.
