By Ryan Minkrmink@digitalsports.comNot many people would have predicted this at the start of Spring.
In the first year under
Coach Jen Greenberg, the Wildcats – who were in the middle of Montgomery County’s pack last year – are headed to the 4A/3A Maryland state semifinals Saturday after Wednesday's 12-10 win over top-seeded and undefeated Churchill.
Wildcats senior
Tess Petesch scored four goals and added two assists, including one to teammate
Meagan Brennan with three minutes, 49 seconds remaining for the game’s final goal. Senior
Abby Bieber also notched four goals and added an assist.
Walter Johnson (12-3), who lost to Churchill 12-11 on April 17, came back from a 4-1 deficit early in the game with a flurry of four goals in 10 minutes.
Churchill (14-1) was led by senior
Angela Biciocchi, who notched six goals. Walter Johnson locked down the Bulldogs’ dangerous attacker
Zoe Kabelac, holding her to just one goal.
Sofia Ein,
Katie Ruben and
Jackie Nolan also each scored a goal for the Bulldogs.
Walter Johnson will now face Westminster (15-1) of Carroll
County Saturday at noon at Arundel High School. No Montgomery County
team has ever advanced past the state semifinals.
