"C" CONFERENCE PLAYOFFS TIP-OFF; ST. TIMOTHY'S AND PARK, BETH TFILOH AND GARRISON FOREST ADVANCE TO MEET TOP FOUR SEEDS

QUARTERFINALS POSTPONED UNTIL WEDNESDAY

The IAAM C Conference basketball tournament tipped off yesterday, as the higher seeds held true to form and advance to meet the top four seeds, which all had opening-round byes. St. Timothy's and Park, in one bracket, and Beth Tfiloh and Garrison Forest, in the other bracket, were Monday winners. Recaps and boxscores are below.
 
In Stevenson, Y4 St. Timothy's defeated X5 Catholic, 40-29. Cold shooting by both teams resulted in a low-scoring first half, as St. Tim's led 16-9. Both picked up the pace in the final half, but the hosts were able to build a double-digit lead and use clock to maintain it down the stretch.

Junior guard Melissa Pearce led the way with 10 points, and senior guard Patty Sheahan had eight points, six assists and six steals. Freshman forward Delaney Lackey came up big with eight points and 10 rebounds, filling in for All-Conference forward Nia Richardson, who was ejected for fighting in the second quarter. St. Timothy's, now 8-9 in the C, travels to X1 Mount Carmel in the next round.
 
Catholic finished at 5-12 in the C. The Cubs were led by freshman Megan Skyrnecki with seven points.

St. Timothy's:
Pearce 10, Lichtenberg 4, Richardson 4, Sheahan 8, Lackey 8, Foster 6. Totals: 16 7-16 40.
Half:
St. Timothy's, 16-9.
 
Park School, the X3 seed, got a big game from Claire Ellwanger and defeated Key, 59-17, in Brooklandville. Park put this contest away in the opening half, as the Bruins raced to a 27-4 lead and never looked back.

Ellwanger, a junior forward, put up a game-high 20 points, including six three-pointers, and also had eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.  Senior Ashley Robinson and junior Leah Gold added eight points apiece. Park improved to 9-8 in the C and will face Y2 Baltimore Lutheran in the next round.
 
Key, the Y6 seed, closes with a record of 1-16 in the C. Junior Rae Pietkiewicz led the Obezags with eight points.

Arielle Vogelsteain and Sarah Hervitz scored nine points apiece to pace Beth Tfiloh, as the Y3 Warriors topped X6 Glenelg Country, 32-23, in Brooklandville. The low-scoring game had Beth Tfuloh up 13-10 at the half, and the hosts won the second half by 19-13. The Warriors were not able to shake the Dragons, but did build on the lead to win by nine. Beth Tfiloh improved to 13-4 and will face X2 Friends in the quarter-finals.
 
Glenelg Country ended its season at 4-13 in the C. Junior guard Kate Broderick tallied seven points to lead the Dragons.

In the final C contest, X4 Garrison Forest beat Y5 Oldfields, 51-20, in Owings Mills. The Grizzlies raced to a 24-7 lead in the half and were never threatened. Senior Brittni Downs scored 13 points and senior Sophie Daly added 11 to lead Garrison, now 7-10. The Grizzlies travel to Annapolis to take on Y1 Annapolis Area Christian.
 
Oldfields finished at 2-15. Senior Laura May had a team-high six points.

All four C Conference quarterfinal games, originally scheduled for this evening, have been postponed until tomorrow because of today's inclement weather.  If schools are closed tomorrow, those games will shift to Thursday.
