GRIZZLIES GROWL, CAVALIERS RETREAT

Garrison Forest blanks Spalding, 3-0, avenges earlier A-Conference field hockey loss

Looking for yet another big IAAM A-Conference field hockey win, Archbishop Spalding came up short yesterday, falling to No. 6 Garrison Forest, 3-0, as the Grizzlies avenged an earlier loss to the Cavaliers.

With the win, Coach Traci Davis?? Garrison squad improved to 8-1-1 in league and 10-1-1 overall.  Bryn Mawr kept pace in the tight ??A? race with a 1-0 win over Severn, as the two front-runners remained tied at the top of the standings, both now with 25 points.

The Cavaliers, now 6-4 (18 points), are used to pulling off big wins. Both Garrison and Bryn Mawr have only one loss apiece, and both of those losses have come at the hands of Archbishop Spalding.

The Cavaliers defeated the Grizzlies, 2-1, back on September 14, and posted a huge 2-0 win over Bryn mawr last week, but Coach Leslee Brady??s team came up short yesterday, unable to light up the scoreboard, and unable to contain the Garrison offense.

The visiting Grizzlies jumped out to a 2-0 lead at the half and tacked on an additional insurance goal in the final half. Claire Miller opened the scoring off an assist from Alex Goldstein at the 18:11 mark, and then Goldstein got her second assist on a score by Martha Plack with just over eight minutes til the break.

Catie Merrick and Liza Blue teamed up for the final goal, as Merrick found the back of the net with four minutes remaining.

Ciarra Delost had nine saves for Spalding, while Emily Cain recorded eight for Garrison.

The Grizzlies will play host to Notre Dame Prep on Thursday.

Despite the two big wins over Garrison and Bryn Mawr, the Cavaliers now have four losses, splitting the season series with the two front-runners, while also losing to Severn and St. Mary??s. Spalding can avenge one of those setbacks on Thursday when it hosts St. Mary??s.

Meanwhile, Garrison Forest and Bryn Mawr will try to avoid the potential upset in upcoming games, as both peak ahead on the calendar to October 23 when they will meet in Owings Mills for a second time, a match that could decide the regular season race.
