Fairfax (May 16, 2009) - The top seeds in the AAA Liberty District tournament were swept away Saturday in a pair of extra inning semifinal contests at Woodson High School as No. 3 Stone Bridge edged No. 2 Madison, 3-2 in eight innings, and then No. 4 Marshall upset No. 1 McLean, 4-1 in eight innings.
Marshall, looking for its first district softball title in more than 30 years, will take on Stone Bridge Mon. May 18 at 6:30 p.m. at Madison High School.
In the semifinal doubleheader opener Stone Bridge senior Cassie Phillips not only picked up the compete game victory but the Lynchburg College recruit drove in Ashley Gardner (4 for 4) with the game winning run in the top of the eighth inning.
In the second game Marshall and McLean combined for more than 20 hits but the contest was tied at 1-1 after seven innings as neither team could turn runners on base into runs scored. Finally, Marshall's No. 9 hitter Trisha Wallace drove in the go-ahead run and the Statesmen followed with two more RBI hits to give junior pitcher Christine Grilliot a 3-run cushion and she closed the deal in the bottom of the eighth inning for the complete game win.
