Last night was supposed to be different. In Shamokin, the Patriots were supposed to have met their match.
Oh, really?
The Indians turned out to be the latest victim.
Carroll defeated Shamokin, 62-51, in a Class AAA state second-rounder at Parkland High School.
"This victory feels good," said Carroll guard Juan'ya Green, whose 24-3 squad is ranked ninth in Southeastern Pennsylvania by The Inquirer.
Coach Paul Romanczuk "said this is like the first team that could play with us," Green said. "So I feel good about this. I just hope we just keep going until we get to the finals."
The victory advanced the Patriots into Friday's quarterfinal round at a neutral site. Carroll will face Neumann-Goretti, a winner last night over Susquehanna Township.
The Indians, on the other hand, finished the season at 23-2. Shamokin also had its 10-game winning streak snapped.
Green had a big hand in snapping the streak.
The 6-foot-3 sophomore scored 14 of his team-high 16 points in the second half. He also finished the game with four rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a blocked shot.
D.J. Irving, Ben Mingledough and Andre Wilburn were the Patriots' other double-digit scorers.
Irving, a junior point guard, had 15 points, three rebounds and four steals. Mingledough, a junior forward, added 11 points, while Wilburn a senior forward, had 10.
Carroll put the game out of reach with a 15-0 run to end the third quarter.
Down by 31-30 with 4 minutes, 29 seconds left in the quarter, Green ignited the rally. He hit a pair of foul shots to give the Patriots the lead for good.
After that, Carroll turned the game into a fastbreak fest. After a Wilburn layup, Mingledough made three straight layups. Then, after Irving scored on a layup, Green hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer to give Carroll 45-31 cushion at the end of the quarter.
