Henry Wise senior basketball player David Golladay found out that the free-throw line was his home away from home in the fourth quarter of Wise's season-opening contest Saturday against Washington Catholic Athletic Conference opponent Archbishop Carroll.

He continually found himself at the charity stripe in the final quarter -- nine times to be exact -- and he continually found the bottom of the net.

In the midst of a Carroll 30-point fourth quarter, Golladay was the equalizer as he scored 10 of his game-total 19 points in the quarter, eight of those points from the line, as Wise opened the season with a 68-59 victory.

"Free throws were really important," Golladay said, "because if it went the other way, we could have easily lost. We work on that a lot in practice; we work on those at the beginning, the middle and the end of each practice. That is something that I pride myself in is making free throws."

The Henry Wise Pumas (1-0) controlled the game from the opening tip as the defense often interrupted the Carroll offensive flow. The Pumas only allowed nine points in the opening quarter, 13 in the second, and flexed its defensive muscle in the third quarter only allowing seven points.

Despite being held in check for three quarters of the game, Carroll's offense found its flow and opened the offensive flood gates as it erupted for 30 points in the fourth quarter alone. However, the Pumas converted 15 of 17 free throws in the fourth quarter to go on to a victory.

"I thought in the first half we played really well," Wise head coach O.J. Johnson said. "We attacked the glass offensively and defensively and hit a lot of good shots. We were able to push the ball and open the game up a little bit.

"In the second half, I was disappointed with the way we closed out the game. ... One of our goals is to try and hold teams to no more than 15 points per quarter."

Carroll (1-3) was led by Kemy Osse who scored a game-high 23 points on the day, albeit in a losing effort. Malick Duada was the only other Carroll player in double figures as he netted 12 points, respectively.

"We have four foreign kids, one from France and three from Canada, and the American system is just a little bit different," Carroll head coach Clinton Perrow said. " ... They have talent, but it may take a little while for everything to catch on. We probably will be a totally different team come the end of the year, but we have to fight through what we are fighting through right now."

Despite only having two points in the fourth quarter, Wise's Phillip Wood also notched 19 points in the victory and was named the Most Valuable Player in the first game of the DTLR National Hoops Festival, conveniently hosted at Henry Wise High School.

"We did well," Wood said. "We could have played a lot more aggressive at the end ... but we did well. It was a great experience."

On starting the season with a win, Johnson added: "It feels good, but I know we can be a lot better."
