Archbishop Spalding's Kody Hines led a 10-hit attack with a homer, single and three RBI's and right-hander Jason Patten held Archbishop Curley to four hits as the Cavaliers handed the Friars their first MIAA A Conference loss of the season, on Monday in East Baltimore.. The 6-2 victory to moved the Cavaliers into un-disputed possession of first place in the league, thanks to a Calvert Hall loss to Gibbons.

The Cavaliers hammered three home runs off Friar pitching, as Hines, Steve Brinkley and Ryan Woods all connected for coach Steve Miller.

The Cavs got a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first, when Hines singled Matt Hillsinger home.

Curley tied the game at one when third baseman Sean Doyle hit one out in the bottom of the second

Spalding had a three-run fourth inning, which featured a lead off homer by Woods and a two-run missle off the bat of Brinkley that traveled close to 400 feet  over the centerfield fence.

Spalding right-hander Jason Patten limited the Friars to four hits, but two were belted out of the park.  Mike O'Neil and Doyle both had solo four-baggers for coach Jack Thomas.

Patten struck out nine, and walked one, before getting relief help in the seventh from Paul DeVito, who got all three outs on strike-outs. DeVito is coming off a wrist injury that sidelined him for three weeks.  The return of the senior left-hander should greatly improve the Cavs chase for a championship. Despite a 12-5 oss to Calvert Hal last week (their only A-Conference defeat of the season), the Cavs vaulted into first place at 7-1 with the win over the Friars.

Lefty Norm Cushing went the first four frames for the Friars, and after walking Jeff Kemp to start the fifth, coach Thomas called on
Sean Thompson. Hines promptly greeted the big right-hander with a rocket over the right-center field fence and the Cavs extended their lead to 6-2.

"I had good stuff today," said Patten. "I was able to establish my fastball early, and then I mixed in a slider."

Curley drops into a tie for second in the conference with Calvert Hall. Both teams are 6-1. They will square off on April 25 at Calvert Hall.
