Senior Sean Thompson powered third-ranked Archbishop Curley to an 8-1 win over newly crowned #1 Archbishop Spalding, at Cavalier field on Monday, as parity continues to reign in the MIAA A Conference. The Cavalier loss, coupled with Calvert Hall's 2-1 win at home over Cardinal Gibbons, dropped coach Steve Miller's team back into a first-place tie with the Cardinals.
Thompson slammed three home runs, a two-run shot in the first, a three-run bomb in the third, and a solo shot in the fourth. His first circuit clout put the Friars up 2-0, and the second one made it 5-0. He had six RBI on the day.
In addition, Thompson hurled a four hitter, and the lone Cavalier run was unearned.
"It feels great to have such a good day against such a good team," said the tall right-hander. "All of my pitches, the fastball, curve, and change-up were working. The team played well behind me; I couldn't ask for more."
Thompson hit two round-trippers to right-center, and wallopped one to deep left.
"Sean threw his best game of the season today," said Friars coach Jack Thomas. "He was hitting spots, and he pitched a smart game. His homer to left in the fourth inning would have been a homer in any park.
Curley (19-6, 13-4) pulled to within one game of league leaders Calvert Hall (22-7, 14-3) and Spalding (25-5, 14-3) with the win.
Also in the A Conference on Monday, Loyola (20-8, 10-6) took control of fourth place with a 12-9 home win over St. Paul's (15-9, 9-7). Even more interesting is the chase for the sixth and final spot in the postseason. Suddenly red-hot Mount St. Joseph (12-12, 6-10) ripped John Carroll, 13-0, to pull within a half game of Gibbons (15-11, 7-10).
The Gaels have now won three straight by a combined score of 44-5 and they swept both games with Gibbons this year to claim the tie-breaker. To reach the post-season, St. Joe must win its final two - against Gilman, at home, on Wednesday and at Loyola, on Thursday - and see Gibbons lose its final game, on Wednesday at Babe Ruth Field, against Loyola.
