Senior Brad Miller and junior Hunter Rief won the #1 and #3 matches, respectively, and freshmen Sam Stewart and Linn Worthington, playing five and six, stepped up big as the Gilman Greyhounds won their second MIAA A Conference Championship in four years, at Caves Valley on Saturday, defeating Calvert Hall 14-7.
Despite windy conditions on an already difficult track, the Greyhounds were able to prevail over the Cardinals in the four hour match.
"Calvert Hall played well, but we seemed to hit the ball where we wanted to when we had to," said Stewart.
The Cardinals got wins from #2 Mike Tavik and #4 Adam Stasuk, but it wasn't enough. Rief and Arthur Worthington won their team point, as did Stewart and Linn Worthington.
"Coach stresses teamwork and that's why we seem to be able to win," said Gilman's #2 Jason Frankel. "It's very gratifying to be able to win a championshiop for him."
Frankel was referring to coach Don Rogers, who led the Greyhounds to another championship.
It was Rogers' fourth straight appearence in the finals, as he leveled his title match record to 2-2.
