Gilman's Diego McQuestion scored what proved to be the winning goal eleven minutes into the second half on a rain-soaked turf at Gilman, on Saturday, as the Greyhounds defeated John Carroll, 2-1, in MIAA A Conference soccer. It was the third straight time that McQuestion scored for coach Jon Seal's squad in three key wins.
The Greyhounds edged Loyola, 1-0, on Tuesday, topped Archbishop Curley, 3-2, on Thursday, and nipped John Carroll 2-1 on Saturday. McQuesion had the only tally in the game against Blakefield.
In Saturday's "Water Bowl" the Eagles grabbed the lead against the Patriots on a direct kick off the foot of Ben Shriver that sailed past keeper Erik Nowicki at 26:06 of the first half.
McQuestion's unassisted boot made it 2-0.
John Carroll's Chris Panian scored with ten minutes to go in the game on an assist from Matt Pramuan to draw the Patriots within one.
The entire first half and most of the second half was played in a driving rain, and at the four minute mark in regulation, a thunder storm hit. The referees suspended play when they saw lightning in the sky, and the teams went to their locker rooms to regroup.
When the teams returned to the field after a mandatory 30 minute delay, there were three minutes to go in the game, and the Patriot offense seemed rejuvenated as they stepped up the pressure on Gilman goalie Christian Hall, but Hall and the Greyhound defense turned back that thrust, and held for the win.
Last Saturday, the Patriots and Nowicki blanked Curley at home 1-0, and then traveled to Baltmore to face Mount St. Joseph, McDonogh and Gilman, in that order Coach Simon Cotton's team played well, but they dropped all three contests in the tough MIAA A Conference.
McDonogh remained one game ahead of the Geyhounds in the conference with a win a 1-0 win over Curley on Friday, and it was Juian Griggs again scoring for coach Steve Nichols.
The Eagles gave Gilman ther only loss of the season on opening day, when they won a 3-2 decision in overtime. The rematch is set for Thursday at McDonogh.
